Charm City
Mark your calendars for April 12-15 2012 to explore and enjoy a historical and diverse city – Baltimore, Maryland!
The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel located in the Inner Harbor. This location is rich with history and has a lot to offer in terms of entertainment and relaxation. There are museums, the Observation Tower, the Aquarium and plenty more. You can visit little shops close to the Inner Harbor. The water taxis also offers rides (all day passes) to see other parts of Baltimore like Little Italy and Fell’s Point and Federal Hill. Within walking distance is Camden Yards and Westside. These places also offer great places to eat and explore. Baltimore has a nice circulator route (free!) that you can use to get where you need and want to go. There are plenty of places to shop, homey and stylish restaurants to eat in and historic and informative places to see. Just a few are the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland Science Center and the American Visionary Art Museum. Not too far away are the Babe Ruth Museum, The Holocaust Memorial and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum. There are markets, theaters and stadiums in Baltimore so you will have plenty to see and do!
We have some exciting things planned for the students for the conference weekend which include:
- All Mixed Up: An Introduction to Honors, Baltimore, and Each other - This is the awesome scavenger hunt that we have planned for everyone! So bring your comfortable walking shoes and your camera!
- Coffee Shop/Open Mic Might will be on Friday evening, after the keynote speaker. Bring your creativity and works of art (Poetry, Songs, Dance etc) to share with everyone! It will be a relaxed and informal setting. ALSO, there will be tables set up with cards for people who want to play, and board games as well.
- Saturday Night Fever Disco Dance Party is planned for the last night that we will be together. It will be a blast! Be prepared to borrow something from your mom or dad to come to the costume part all “wigged out”! It’s a 70s themed disco party so be prepared to see some groovy outfits and boogie to some smashin’ hits! There will be photographs and prizes for best costumes. It’s going to be on the 15th floor of the Hyatt with an absolutely stunning view!
There will also be the City as Text explorations which will allow you to really dig into the best of what Baltimore has to offer. Interesting speakers will be attending the conference and there will be some awesome creative workshops planned.
As we get closer to the conference date, we will keep updating you on the upcoming events. So if everything goes as planned, the weekend in Baltimore should be a blast!!
Some Tips for first time attendees:
- Bring appropriate clothing for the events:
- Banquet and conference presentations = business casual ( even formal if you’d like – the best rule to go by is always dress up, not down because you can always take something off but you can’t always add something)
- City as Text = comfortable clothing and shoes to walk around in
- Dress for the weather and then some. It might be really cold or really warm.
- Be prepared for anything – especially if you will be presenting. Bring backups and extra copies of material. Things get lost and misplaced. Expect the worst; hope for the best.
- Do some research on Baltimore, Maryland – It’ll give you a richer experience if you know a little about it. A great place to start is www.Baltimore.org.
- Read as much as you can about the Conference and what it’s about. Go on Facebook. Contact the representatives. Ask questions. We will be happy to help you out with anything that you’d like to know.
