Conference Opportunity – Pittsburgh, PA

News

Robert Morris University’s honors program (Pittsburgh, PA) is co-sponsoring their 6th annual undergraduate conference, “Intersections,” with California University of Pennsylvania’s honors program, to be held on April 20, 2012 at Robert Morris University.

Presenters will have two options for sharing their research papers: in person at the conference or by video-conferencing.

The call for papers can be found here, and the call for presentations via video-conferencing can be found here.

Research presented can be previously-presented work as long as it was not presented at this particular conference last year, so, it is a prime opportunity for NRHC students presenting work at the April 12-15 conference to share their ideas with a wider audience. It is also a good chance for students whose work may not have been accepted into this year’s NRHC conference to receive a second look from a review committee to get their research to a new audience.

Best of luck to all applicants!

Inaugural Art Exhibit Debuts at Portland Conference

News

Pictured are Emily Stevenson, Jessica Koch, and Jeremy Frusco

By Lori Rubeling

The inaugural NRHC student art exhibition, installed at the Eastland Hotel Gallery, welcomed many visitors. Seven of the twelve artists were able to attend the show, meet each other, and of course talk about their work with gallery visitors. I truly enjoyed meeting and spending time with Cara Constantino, Jeremy Frusco, Cameron Garrity, Jessica Koch, Stephanie Lyon, Brie Skinner, and Emily Stevenson. Our conversations deepened my appreciation of their work.

Joanna Gonsalves and I also met with Jennifer Hutchins the Portland First Friday Art Walk (http://www.firstfridayartwalk.com/) co-sponsor and Portland Arts & Cultural Alliance executive director. Jennifer’s interest in our exhibit was heartwarming. She also provided background information on how the City of Portland promotes its cultural events.

An archive of the NRHC Art Walk Exhibition can be viewed at http://nrhcartwalkexhibition.blogspot.com/.

Lori Rubeling is the exhibition curator and incoming NRHC Vice President.

Promise in Portland: A Student’s Account of the NRHC Conference

News Students

By Shannon Rasmussen

About a month ago, I traveled to Portland, Maine for the Northeast Regional Honors Conference. Students from all over the Northeast met to discuss projects and papers they had completed in Honors Programs from Maryland to Maine. My colleague, Tyler, was presenting on Post-Earthquake Haiti, and I was presenting a paper I had written about Neuroplasticity.

When I first read the theme of the Conference – Resurgam, or “rise again” – my immediate thought for a potential topic was neuroplasticity. The brain’s ability to rewire and re-work itself to compensate for damage or loss exemplifies the ability of humans to recover from devastating injury, or “rise again”. I had never presented at a conference, so I was unsure how to approach presenting my topic to a crowd of people who had most likely never heard of it. I also have a unique fear of planes, which made the thought of travelling to Maine quite daunting. However, I was in good company – Dr. McCoy-Deh (honors program director) gave me excellent advice on how to present properly, and assured me that the plane trip would be fine. (more…)

Recapping of the Portland Conference

News

By Natalie Shaw

From March 31 to April 3, the Northeast Regional Honors Council’s annual conference was held in Portland, Maine, and weather played a major role in making this conference a memorable one for its attendees! Those of us traveling north from Maryland faced flight delays because of tornado warnings that grounded planes in Florida, and everyone who had arrived on Thursday woke up to a winter wonderland Friday morning, April 1.

Anchors on every morning news channel joked about Mother Nature’s “April Fool’s” prank on Maine while the conference coordinators scrambled to find alternative options to fill the City as Text time slot. Some excursions had to be canceled, and others were reworked to better fit with the stormy conditions outside.  Those of us on the walking tours got the chance to immerse ourselves in the Portland environment, experiencing the snow as the locals did. Although the Maine Historical Society, one of the main attractions on the “History and Houses” tour, closed due to the weather, we managed to see plenty of historical landmarks, including City Hall, and some newer attractions, like the recently renovated Portland Public Library. Danielle Trial’s Portland Presentation

Danielle Trial, Rhode Island College

During the Portland Conference in April, Danielle Trial, a junior at Rhode Island College, presented on “The effect of adaptive instruction on the rhythm achievement of elementary school students with hearing disabilities.” Her project involved the use of drums and body percussion and, based on the response of students at the Student Caucus and of the audience at her impromptu presentation during Sunday morning’s breakfast, Trial’s project was one of the most talked about and well-received of the event. Click here to read Trial’s description of her presenting experience and here to see photos of both her Saturday scheduled lecture and her encore Sunday presentation in the hotel lobby.

Monroe College and NRHC’s original website

By Cliff Brozo

It was a case worthy of a Sherlock Holmes novel.  Almost two years ago, Monroe College Professor Terry Jewett suddenly passed away while riding his bicycle in New York’s Central Park.  The Monroe community was devastated as this happened the day before the spring semester was scheduled to begin.  Terry had become a big part of the Northeast Region Honors Council and was instrumental in helping Monroe College establish a presence in the Region.   He created and maintained the original version of the site you’re on now – www.nrhchonors.org.  (more…)
