Conference Opportunity – Pittsburgh, PA

Robert Morris University’s honors program (Pittsburgh, PA) is co-sponsoring their 6th annual undergraduate conference, “Intersections,” with California University of Pennsylvania’s honors program, to be held on April 20, 2012 at Robert Morris University.

Presenters will have two options for sharing their research papers: in person at the conference or by video-conferencing.

The call for papers can be found here, and the call for presentations via video-conferencing can be found here.

Research presented can be previously-presented work as long as it was not presented at this particular conference last year, so, it is a prime opportunity for NRHC students presenting work at the April 12-15 conference to share their ideas with a wider audience. It is also a good chance for students whose work may not have been accepted into this year’s NRHC conference to receive a second look from a review committee to get their research to a new audience.

Best of luck to all applicants!

NRHC Portland Conference Presidential Address

During the Portland Conference this Spring, NRHC President Julia Fennell’s offered students a creative connection between poetry and the daily life of an honors student in her presidential address. Her speech, “The Poetry of Honors” connected the conference to National Poetry Month, as the conference took place mostly in April.

She suggested that being an honors student and reading a poem have much in common, specifically how one approaches both tasks. “Honors education and reading a poem require similar mindsets,” she said, “Both interactions require that we do the following: Inhabit the Room, Play in the Dark, and Conspire and Collaborate.”

The full text of her speech – in which she expands upon these three ideas – can be found here.
